India Safety

India Safety

Generally, the level of crimes in India is moderate and India is relatively safe for tourists. The most common types of crime in India are theft, armed robbery and rapes. Agree on all fares and payments in advance and being told that you can pay “as you like” is a bad sign in any country not just in India. While travelling in the transport and in general never accept any food or drinks as they might be spiked.   India is rated 106th safest country in the world, based on the safest and most dangerous countries ranking.

Is India a Safe or Dangerous country?

India is a relatively safe country, though there are some hazards each newcomer should be aware of when travelling in India. Terrorism is a threat, the probability of attacks is high, constant vigilance is recommended- there was the attack a couple of years ago. Demonstrations and strikes might cause inconveniences and unrest in India. People are relatively vocal.  It can be escalated rapidly and turn violent. Monitor local media in order to be aware of any strikes in advance.

Swimming in India: Seemingly to be safe, Indian water might hide dangerous strong undertows. Don’t just go to the Ganges and try to swim. You might be swept out of India.  During monsoon season in India, you should exercise extra caution while swimming in open water along the Indian coastline. Every year, several people in the Bay of Bengal, Mumbai, Goa, and Puru drown. There have been reports of crocodile attacks in salt water on the Andaman Islands.   Train travel: Travel by train in India is generally safe. Nevertheless, accidents and on-board fires are sometimes caused by aging infrastructure, poorly maintained equipment, overcrowding, and operator errors.   Instable areas   Jammu & Kashmir: Due to the high probability of terrorist attacks and frequent civil unrest, travelling to these areas with the exception of visits to Ladakh region and its capital Len is not recommended. Since the 90s, as many as 70.000 people have been killed in the Kashmir conflict. India-Pakistan border   Travelling is not recommended within 10th km zone of the border between Pakistan and India. Military presence is high, due to the disputed area: Karakoram mountain range.   North-eastern states Civil unrest and often bombings of public transport, make the area dangerous, thus travelling is strongly unadvised to these areas. States: Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur are especially under concern.     Restricted/Protected areas: Certain areas need special advance permission. Areas requiring a permit include: The state of Arunachal Pradesh Portions of the state of Sikkim Portions of the state of Himachal Pradesh near the Chinese border Portions of the state of Uttarakhand (Uttaranchal) near the Chinese border Portions of the state of Rajasthan near the Pakistani border Portions of the state of Jammu & Kashmir near the Line of Control with Pakistan and certain portions of Ladakh The Andaman & Nicobar Islands The Union Territory of the Laccadives Islands (Lakshadweep) Portions of the state of Manipur Portions  of the state of Mizoram Portions of the state of Nagaland     Crime: Petty crime is on the rise. It is common, particularly on public transport. Travelling by train, lock your sleeping compartments. Violent crime against foreigners is uncommon. Be cautious displaying valuables or cash in order to reduce chances of being robbed. ATM scams are on the rise. Use a credit card for payments only at reputable establishments, otherwise, there is a high chance, that your credit card credentials might be stolen.   Sexual assaults: India notoriously known for a high rate of sexual assaults, though many of them are committed against locals, foreigners must be cautious as well. Travelling alone for women is not recommended. Sexual harassment might occur anywhere: marketplaces, train stations, buses and public streets. Delhi has the highest rate of sexual harassment. Female tourists should be accompanied, avoid isolated areas at any time of day.

Knowledge Based Authentication KBA

Hate it when you have to verify yourself to the bank telephone operator? When they ask if you are you? How can you prove that it is you? Remember the questions that they ask?

KBA Knowledge Based Authentication

Knowledge-based authentication

Knowledge-based authentication, commonly referred to as KBA, is a method of authentication which seeks to prove the identity of someone accessing a service such as a financial institution or website. As the name suggests, KBA requires the knowledge of private information of the individual to prove that the person providing the identity information is the owner of the identity. There are two types of KBA static KBA, which is based on a pre-agreed set of shared secrets, and dynamic KBA, which is based on questions generated from a wider base of personal information.

Static KBA (shared secrets)

Static KBA, also referred to as “shared secrets” or “shared secret questions”, is commonly used by banks, financial services companies and e-mail providers to prove the identity of the customer before allowing account access or, as a fall-back, if the user forgets their password. At the point of initial contact with a customer, a business using static KBA must collect the information to be shared between the provider and customer—most commonly the questions and corresponding answers. This data must then be stored only to be retrieved when the customer comes back to access the account.

The weakness of static KBA was demonstrated in an incident in 2008 where unauthorised access was gained to the e-mail account of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. The Yahoo! account’s password could be reset using shared secret questions including “where did you meet your spouse?” along with the date of birth and ZIP code of the former governor to which answers were easily available online.

Some identity verification providers have recently introduced secret sounds or pictures in an effort to help secure sites and information. These tactics require the same methods of data storage and retrieval as secret questions.

Dynamic KBA

Dynamic KBA is a high level of authentication that uses knowledge questions to verify each individual identity but does not require the person to have provided the questions and answers beforehand. Questions are compiled from public and private data such as marketing data, credit reports or transaction history.

To initiate the process, basic identification factors such as name, address and date of birth must be provided by the consumer and checked with an identity verification service. After the identity is verified, questions are generated in real time from the data records corresponding to the individual identity provided. Typically, the knowledge needed to answer the questions is not available in a person’s wallet (some companies call them “out-of-wallet questions”) making it difficult for anyone other than the actual identity owner to know the answer and obtain access to secured information. Generally, the period of time for the person is given to respond to questions and the number of attempts is limited to prevent answers from being researched.

Dynamic KBA is employed in several different industries to verify the identities of customers as a means of fraud prevention and compliance adherence. Because this type of KBA is not based on an existing relationship with a consumer, it gives businesses a way to have higher identity assurance on customer identity during account origination.

AKC

AKC Safety and AKC Safety Training

AKC is The American Kennel Club (AKC) is a registry of purebred dog pedigrees in the United States. In addition to maintaining its pedigree registry, this kennel club also promotes and sanctions events for purebred dogs, including the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, an annual event which predates the official forming of the AKC, the National Dog Show, and the AKC National Championship sponsored by Royal Canin, formerly the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship. Unlike most other countries’ kennels clubs, the AKC is not part of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (World Canine Organization).

In the early 1800s, the English became concerned with the beauty of dogs rather than their function. This fad spread to North America, and in 1877, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show began. Soon after, the need for a regulating body became obvious. The National American Kennel Club, which had been founded in 1876, began to publish and make publicly available its studbook in 1879. This organization, however, had a more vested interest in field trials than in conformation shows, and eventually changed its name to the National Field Trial Association and stopped hosting conformation shows completely.

In 1884, a group of 13 breed clubs, 10 American clubs and 3 Canadian clubs, founded the American Kennel Club or the AKC. These 13 clubs pledged “to do everything to advance the study, breeding, exhibiting, running and maintenance of purity of thoroughbred dogs.”  The AKC differed from The Kennel Club in that individuals could not directly join the Kennel Club; they became members of smaller, individual breed clubs, which were themselves members of the AKC.  When arguments began to develop between the American and Canadian breed clubs in 1886, the Canadian clubs pulled out from the organization and established their own kennel club two years later, the Canadian Kennel Club.

In 1894, the AKC began to refuse to allow Canadian dogs without an American pedigree to participate in its shows, following the prevailing trends in American purebred cattle organizations.  In 1906, the US Department of Agriculture ruled that any dogs imported to America who were not registered with the AKC would have to pay a duty charge; this was later changed in 1911, allowing any dog registered with a kennel club in its home country duty-free entry into the country.  Soon after the AKC, CKC, and KC produced agreements that made any dog eligible to be registered with the club in its home country, eligible for registration in the remaining two clubs as well. In 1909, the group moved to New York and became incorporated.

On July 1, 2012, the AKC began to recognize certain titles issued by the North American Flyball Association. These titles are Flyball Champion (FDCh), Flyball Master (FM), and the ONYX title.

Registration

The AKC is the largest registry of purebred dogs in the U.S., and is the only not-for profit registry, as well as the most well-known, and the most influential. For a purebred dog to be registered with the AKC, the dog’s parents must be registered with the AKC as the same breed, and the litter in which the dog is born must be registered with the AKC. If the dog’s parents are not registered with the AKC or the litter is not registered, an exception may be made if the AKC determines, through special registry research, that the dog is eligible for AKC registration. Once a determination of eligibility is met, either by litter application or registry research, the dog can be registered as purebred by the AKC. Registration indicates only that the dog’s parents were registered as one recognized breed; it does not necessarily indicate that the dog comes from healthy or show-quality blood lines, nor is registration necessarily a reflection on the quality of the breeder or how the puppy was raised.

Recognized breeds

Main articles: List of dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club and American Kennel Club Groups

A medium-sized dog stands with his body side-on to the camera, his head turned towards it. The dog is primarily white with blue-colored ticking and patches. The ticking becomes tan on the dog’s legs.

A Bluetick Coonhound, one of the 202 different breeds recognized by the AKC. This breed is in the Hound Group.

As of November 2016, the AKC recognizes 202 breeds.

The AKC divides dog breeds into seven groups, one class, and the Foundation Stock Service, consisting of the following (as of January 2011):

Shows

AKC National Championship

The AKC National Championship sponsored by Royal Canin, formerly AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, is an annual event held in Orlando, FL. The show is by invitation only. The dogs invited to the show have either finished their championship from the bred-by-exhibitor class or ranked in the Top 25 of their breed. The show can often be seen on major television stations.

Canine Good Citizen

The AKC also offers the Canine Good Citizen program. This program tests dogs of any breed (including mixed breed) or type, registered or not, for basic behavior and temperament suitable for appearing in public and living at home.

Another AKC affiliate is AKC Reunite, formerly AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR), founded in 1995, is North America’s largest not for profit pet ID and recovery service.

Another AKC affiliate is the AKC Humane Fund which supports breed Rescue activities, assists shelters that permit domestic violence victims to bring their pets and educates dog lovers about responsible dog ownership.

Criticism and controversy

Genetics

The AKC has been criticized for the prevalence of genetic disorders in their dogs. As many as 25% of purebred dogs registered by the AKC has at least one hereditary genetic problem. These problems cost breeders and owners almost $1 billion in vet bills and lost revenues from stillborn pups. Some breed clubs, such as the U.S. Border Collie Club, resisted applying for AKC breed acceptance due to fears that doing so would be detrimental to the genetics of the breed they represent. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club voted to reject AKC recognition in May 2000 due to the incompatibility of the breed club’s no-sales-to-pet-stores rule, and the kennel club’s requiring such sales. The breed club had such a rule to aid in the genetic health of the breed.

These genetic issues have resulted in the emergence of “puppy lemon laws” in several US states. These laws protect dog owners from genetic diseases that their breeder may have neglected to inform them of, allowing them to get a refund for the cost of the puppy or to force the breeder to pay their vet bills.

Health

The AKC supports some canine health research, and has run advertising campaigns implying that the AKC is committed to healthy dogs, but the AKC’s role in furthering dog health is controversial. Temple Grandin maintains that the AKC’s standards only regulate physical appearance, not emotional or behavioral health. The AKC itself states that “There is a widely held belief that “AKC” or “AKC papers” guarantee the quality of a dog. This is not the case. AKC is a registry body. A registration certificate… in no way indicates the quality or state of health of the dog.”

The AKC has no health standards for breeding; the only breeding restriction is age (a dog can be no younger than 8 months). Though the majority of the 170 breed-specific parent clubs have a health committee devoted to their breed’s specific concerns, the AKC prohibits clubs from imposing stricter regulations since the AKC Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline apply to all breed clubs and do not provide an option for breed clubs to extend or override them. Thus, an AKC breed club cannot require a higher breeding age, hip dysplasia ratings, genetic tests for heritable diseases, or any other restrictions. Parent clubs have the power to define the looks of the breed, or breed standard and may also restrict participation in non-regular events or classes such as Futurities or Maturities to only those dogs meeting their defined criteria. These non-regular events can require health testing, DNA sampling, instinct/ability testing, and other outlined requirements as established by the hosting club.

In summary, attention to health among breeders is voluntary and not mandated. By contrast, many dog clubs outside the US do require health tests of breeding dogs. The German Shepherd Club of Germany,  for example, requires hip and elbow X-rays in addition to other tests before a dog can be bred. Such breeding restrictions are not allowed in AKC member clubs.[citation needed] As a result, some US breeders have established parallel registries or health databases outside of the AKC; for example, the Berner Garde established such a database in 1995 after genetic diseases reduced the average lifespan of a Bernese Mountain Dog to 7 years. By comparison, the Swiss Bernese Mountain Dog Club introduced mandatory hip X-rays in 1971.

For these, and other reasons, a small number of breed clubs have not yet joined the AKC so they can maintain stringent health standards, but, in general, the breeders’ desire to show their dogs at AKC shows such as the Westminster Dog Show has won out over these concerns. Concern surrounding the AKC’s connections to low-quality breeders has resulted in some dog owners seeking to distance themselves from the organization. In October 2012, Hailey Parker, a longtime Coton de Tulear breeder, filed a lawsuit against the AKC and cited the AKC’s connections with high-volume breeders among the reasons.[28] The Coton’s “reputation and business model is based on a disassociation from ‘puppy mills’ and similar commercial breeding operations,” according to the complaint.

The Club has also been criticized for courting large scale commercial breeders and for lax enforcement of breeding regulations. The AKC employs just 9 field inspectors and critics argue that its inspections are ineffective. For example, the owner of a Montana malamute kennel approved by AKC inspectors in 2008 and 2009 was sentenced to five years in prison for animal cruelty in operating that kennel.  Similarly, an AKC inspector found a North Carolina kennel “in compliance with AKC’s Care Conditions Policy” three months before county officers raided the facility and found the dogs in “poor” condition, suffering from illnesses, injuries and living in “unhealthy conditions,” according to court documents. A veterinarian told the court that the rescued dogs had ailments that ranged “from serious to severe” and that “most of the injuries appeared to be chronic, having been in existence for a substantial period of time.”

Similarly, the Humane Society of the United States criticized the AKC for not taking a stand against puppy mills. According to the Humane Society’s report, “over the past five years, AKC has opposed more than 80 different state bills and local ordinances designed to provide stronger protections for dogs in puppy mills”.

The AKC does support several health research initiatives. The AKC Canine Health Foundation funded research that led to the mapping of the canine genome (DNA sequence) with grants totaling more than $2 million. Sequencing of the dog genome began in June 2003, funded in large part by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and finished the completed sequence of the entire dog genome at MIT’s Broad Institute in 2005. Because people inherit many of the same diseases as dogs, humans can also benefit from health research funded for dogs.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the AKC Canine Health Foundation have established the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) to encourage health testing by breeders and provide breeders and researchers with information to improve breeding programs. More than 135 different breeds have specific health testing pre-requisites required by their parent breed club.

The AKC tracks all dog related legislation in the United States, lobbies lawmakers and issues legislative alerts on the internet asking for citizens to contact public officials. They are particularly active in combating breed-specific legislation such as bans on certain breeds considered dangerous.

August – What happens in August

August

Depiction of harvesting in the August calendar page of the Queen Mary Psalter (fol. 78v), ca. 1310.

August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars, and the fifth of seven months to have a length of 31 days. August was originally named Sextilis in Latin because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, and March was the first month of the year. About 700 BC, August became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 46 BC (708 AUC), giving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC, it was renamed in honor of Augustus. According to a Senatus consultum quoted by Macrobius, he chose this month because it was the time of several of his great triumphs, including the conquest of Egypt.

In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere. In many European countries, August is the holiday month for most workers. Numerous religious holidays occurred during August in ancient Rome.

Certain meteor showers take place in August. The Kappa Cygnids take place in August, with the dates varying each year. The Alpha Capricornids meteor shower takes place as early as July 10 and ends at around August 10, and the Southern Delta Aquariids take place from mid-July to mid-August, with the peak usually around July 28–29. The Perseids, a major meteor shower, typically takes place between July 17 and August 24, with the days of the peak varying yearly. The star cluster of Messier 30 is best observed around August.

Among the aborigines of the Canary Islands, especially among the Guanches of Tenerife, the month of August received in the name of Beñesmer or Beñesmen, which was also the harvest festival held this month.

Here in Singapore August isn’t just another month. August is the month where Singapore gained its independence. August 9 is a holiday to celebrate our National Day. August is the month just before school holidays and for kids or adults alike, it means we are ¼ of the way to the end of the year. It also means there will be starting to get more rainy days.

August- so  much to do in August.

At Simply Safety August also means the preparation month for NEBOSH September exams. August means the WDA courses are on going and we need to do our preparation works.

NTUC

NTUC

NTUC- National Trades Union Congress. NTUC was founded 6 September 1961. Currently NTUC has 900,000 NTUC members. Current president Mary Liew. While NTUC is said to be non political its Secretary General is Ng Chee Meng- a Minister and PAP member

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), also known as the Singapore National Trades Union Congress (SNTUC), is the sole national trade union centre in Singapore. NTUC is at the heart of the Labour Movement which comprise 58 affiliated trade unions, 2 affiliated trade associations, 10 social enterprises, 6 related organisations as well as a growing ecosystem of U Associates and enterprise partners. Together, it helms May Day celebrations and organises an annual rally in support of workers’ solidarity and commitment to tripartite partnership.

The NTUC was created in 1961 when the Singapore Trades Union Congress (STUC), which had backed the People’s Action Party (PAP) in its successful drive for self-government, split into the pro-PAP NTUC and the leftist Singapore Association of Trade Unions (SATU). The SATU collapsed in 1963 following the government’s detention of its leaders during Operation Coldstore and its subsequent official deregistration on 13 November 1963, leaving the NTUC as the sole trade union centre.  Presently, over 98% of union members are in unions affiliated with the NTUC.

After the PAP’s decisive electoral victory in 1968, the government passed the Industrial Relations (Amendment) Act of 1968, which severely limited workers’ rights to strike. From 1969, the NTUC adopted, in its own words, “a cooperative, rather than a confrontational policy towards employers.”

Relations between the PAP and NTUC are very close, and have often resulted in members holding office in both organisations at the same time. The NTUC’s founder, Devan Nair, was a PAP stalwart and later served as President of Singapore. Ong Teng Cheong, the first directly elected President of Singapore, was both the NTUC Secretary-General, and the Deputy Prime Minister (from 1985), until his presidential election. Lim Boon Heng and Lim Swee Say, the previous Secretaries-General, also became Cabinet ministers. As of 4 May 2015, Chan Chun Sing took over as Secretary-General from Lim Swee Say, who left the NTUC to become Minister for Manpower (with effect from the same date). Zainal Sapari is the director of NTUC Care and Share while Seah Kian Peng is the Group Chief Executive of NTUC FairPrice.

Trade unions in Singapore

Trade unions in Singapore are run along democratic lines, and membership is voluntary. Major decisions on industrial actions are taken only with majority support expressed through secret ballot.

There are three tiers of union leadership, all elected via secret ballot. Workers in a company elect their branch leaders. The next layer is the executive committee of a union. Officials from the executive committee are drawn from the branches. At the national level, there is the Central Committee of the NTUC. The 21-member Central Committee is elected every four years.

Union leaders and employers serve on key institutions such as the National Wages Council, the Economic Development Board, the Central Provident Fund and the Singapore Productivity and Standards Board. Government and employer representatives also serve on the boards of the cooperatives, business ventures and other organisations controlled by the NTUC.

NTUC Executive Committee

At union headquarters level, key branch officials represent their branches at Union Headquarters as delegates. They have a right to vote or stand as candidates in elections to the Union Executive Committee which is responsible for the effective operation of the union.

Affiliated unions are represented at the NTUC Delegates Conference, the supreme authority of the labour movement. The Delegates Conference is held once in two years. During this conference, delegates review the work of the NTUC and map out future directions for the labour movement.

NTUC Central Committee

At the national level, once in four years, the union delegates elect a 21-member NTUC Central Committee to oversee the work of the labour movement. The Central Committee members elect among themselves the Secretary-General, the President, the Secretary for Financial Affairs (Treasurer) and Vice-Presidents. The Central Committee appoints other principal office bearers.

Union leadership includes Members of Parliament. These members of parliament are subject to elections, just as the other grassroots unionists are. Many other Members of Parliament, including Cabinet ministers, serve as union advisors.

Union membership

In April 2016, the total Union Membership figure in Singapore was 900,000. There are two main groups of members: Ordinary Branch (OB) members are directly represented by the unions/affiliates and enjoy direct collective bargaining rights, while General Branch (GB) members, who work in non-unionised companies, cannot be represented directly but are given workplace advice and whose employment issues are still handled professionally. NTUC also works with social enterprises like NTUC FairPrice and NTUC Link, as well as partners like NTUC Club and NTUC Healthcare to provide a range of core and lifestyle benefits for all of its members.

Since 2002, executives are also permitted to join the NTUC membership base, which was traditionally composed of rank-and-file employees. Apart from lifestyle benefits, they also enjoy some representation (if they are employed in unionised companies).

U Family

U Family is an initiative of NTUC, handled by NTUC’s Family Development Unit. It is a community made up of NTUC and non-NTUC members. Based on the community’s programmes, the community is relevant to families with children below the age of 12.

The objective of the U Family community is to build “strong and happy families” in Singapore through the development of family-focused initiatives and programmes to strengthen family bonds and support working families with the advocacy of pro-family practices in the work place.

The community was formed in July 2006, under the name of Mummy and Me. Made up of mostly mothers, the community grew to 9,000 members at the end of 2007. In May 2008, the community changed its name to U Family to be inclusive of fathers and other members of the family.

In September 2010, the community claimed to have more than 210,000 members in its outreach base.

The community is engaged through online platforms and events.

Communication to the members is via the U Family website and its e-newsletters, which go to members monthly.

The U Family website is part of the NTUC website. It houses content that is related to parenting and family life, such as family activities, parenting articles and contests.

The U Family community Facebook profile counted 2189 “friends” on 6 October 2009. The community shares photos and videos of events through the Facebook platform.

Why Ah Meng needed Safety Training

Why Ah Meng needed safety training

In case you don’t know who Meng or Ah Meng was- Ah Meng was a fat hairy sweaty….. orang utan.

Ah Meng or Meng was a fat old Sumatran orangutan. Meng was born 18 June 1960 and Meng died on 8 Feb 2008. Meng was a icon for Singapore tourism. Meng was fat and female. Apologies Meng – the truth sometimes hurts. If Meng was human Meng would probably still be fat and would want botox. Anyway why would Meng require safety or safety training?  Lets start from the beginning.

Meng was smuggled from Indonesia and kept illegally as a domestic pet before being recovered by a veterinarian in 1971. Meng was then eleven years old and was given a home at the Singapore Zoo. Ah Meng was very boring, maybe even quite square when at home. Imagine an animal surrounded by square walls. Eating 3 square meals a day. When in the wild they probably never encountered any rectangle or square.

Slowly Ah Meng was the head of her small clan, which lives in a large enclosure with about twenty other orangutans. Maybe because other orangutans thought Meng was fat and had a fake laugh or fake smile so they just let Meng lead. Meng had five children and became a grandmother in 1990. Maybe Meng could only do that when she was a orangutan. May not work out in real life.

Meng was the poster girl of the Singapore Zoo. Pictures of her have been used in Singapore’s tourism advertisements worldwide. She has also been featured in over 30 travel films and more than 300 articles. Some of the foreign dignitaries and celebrities that visited Ah Meng included Prince Philip and Michael Jackson. The PR consultancy that sold the idea of Ah Meng without the four square walls or cages was brilliant.

Meng was more approachable by humans than other primates in her clan. Due to her interactive nature, she was the first to host the zoo’s ‘Breakfast With Ah Meng’ programme, whereby visitors would eat their morning meal and then have a photograph taken with the orangutan. By allowing visitors to interact closely with Ah Meng and other orangutans, the Singapore Zoo aims to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving the orangutan’s natural habitat as well as of other environmental issues.

In 1992, the Singapore Tourism Promotion Board conferred Ah Meng a “Special Tourism Ambassador” award in recognition of her contribution to tourism in Singapore. She was the first non-human recipient of the award. She received a certificate and a stack of bananas.

Ah Meng was specially featured in the Singapore Guide book of 1988, The Singapore Treasury by Andreas and Carola Augustin.

As she aged, her public appearances became less frequent for fear of subjecting her to stress.

In March 1982, during the shooting of a promotional video at MacRitchie Reservoir, Ah Meng climbed a tree and stayed there for two nights. On her way down, she fell seven stories and broke her right arm. If Meng was safety trained- maybe Meng would not have fallen down.

In March 1992, Ah Meng attacked a French female research student who was studying orang utan behaviour and spent much time with Ah Meng’s long-time keeper, Alagappasamy Chellaiyah, out of jealousy. Yes Ah Meng is a jealous type. Maybe Meng isn’t too happy with others success or that others do better than Meng.

Ah Meng died on 8 February 2008 due to old age. She was 47 years old, or 95 orangutan years.

Why did Meng require safety training. Well then Meng would not have been caught by the poachers or Meng would not have fallen down or Meng would not have attached someone.

See don’t learn from a monkey like Ah Meng. Don’t pick up safety training from Ah Meng, obviously Ah Meng isn’t or wasn’t too smart. Don’t learn or get accreditation from Ah Meng because well- you cant deal with a fat monkey.

Rest in peace Ah Meng.
