What Safety Leaders Must Do

What Safety Leaders need to do

Some people ask what should a good safety leader do? What helps with safety leadership?

Some of the typical things that good companies with good safety leadership does are as follows

  • Good Safety Leadership is about Sharing and Clarifying the vision. Making it crystal clear for employees
  • Good Safety Leadership is about investing in people and investing in their skills and knowledge. This in the end will assist the safety vision
  • Good Safety Leadership is about getting involved. Making its your vision. Showing people how this is your baby.
  • Good Safety Leadership is about engaging people. People need to be engaged so that they are part of the vision. They are not just spectators

The best way to improve Teamwork in organisations is to engage Safety@Work Consultancy who carry out consulting and training activities around Winning Hearts and Minds. One of the modules we carry revolves around Safety Leadership. We have trained many CEOs and Executive management staff to develop safety leadership skills. Safety@Work Consultancy also helped Petronas at the Petronas Learning Center when it was thinking about launching the Winning Hearts and Minds approach to its rigs and contractors

Safety Leadership

Safety Leadership

“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” Warren Bennis.  It should not just be about Safety Leadership. Its about Leadership at all levels and in all things. You can have a very safe company that does not do any work. That wont work for the long run right? So you need to have a good balance. Safety Leadership is not about stopping all work and just focusing on safety. Question is how do you translate a vision where the company is profitable and reputable and merge it with a company that is safe? Well companies must focus on doing things right. The safety leadership vision should be about doing things right. That safety vision should be translated into a reality and that takes good safety leadership. Safety leadership is also not just about the CEO having safety leadership. Its about having safety leadership at all levels.

So how do good safety leaders turn vision into reality?

Share the big picture

Are you able to explain and describe how the company or the department will look like? Can the staff and employees see your vision or your big picture? And not we aren’t talking about management systems or checklists or passing some ISO certifications. Its about seeing how they can be part of this vision

Look at the Challenges

While you plan for the good things- also recognise that there will be challenges and think about the possible solutions to these challenges. It could be placing barriers to prevent something from occurring in the first place.

Clear expectations

Safety Leadership is not just about your vision but holding people accountable for their actions. More correctly set the clear expectations of what is required by employees and what you expect out from them.

Teamwork in Safety

Teamwork in Safety

It takes a team to get things done. It takes teamwork to work safely and with good quality. Everyone has to work together as a team. How do we improve teamwork? How can we build teamwork when it comes to safety and progress? How can we build teamwork on rigs?

Lets first start with what is team work-

Teamwork is everyone working together. Teamwork means taking time to show others the safe way of doing things. Teamwork is asking for help when you need it. Teamwork is knowing that people will help you when you ask. Team work is the ability to see that some one needs help even when they don’t ask. Teamwork is cooperation to do things right

The secret to Teamwork is

Having a good culture in the team or organisation

Its having good communication

Its having good leadership skills

Its about motivation

Its about trust

Its been evidenced that companies with good safety records have good teamwork among their teams. That people recognise each other as part of the family and as such everyone takes care of each other.

So question is – how do you improve teamwork?

The best way to improve Teamwork in organisations is to engage Safety@Work Consultancy who carry out consulting and training activities around Winning Hearts and Minds. One of the modules we carry revolves around teamwork and teambuilding. Safety@Work Consultancy also helped Petronas at the Petronas Learning Center when it was thinking about launching the Winning Hearts and Minds approach to its rigs and contractors

Communication in Safety

Communication

People say that we need to understand the role of communication in safety and communication to achieve a good safety culture. I say that we need to have an understanding of the role of communication in our daily life as well the companies success or failure. It should not be restricted to safety or quality- its much bigger than that.

We need to engage our employees to grow our company. No communication or lack of communication means lack of engagement. It means lack of growth for the company. We need to have open channels of communication and we need clear communication.

Unfortunately schools don’t teach us to communicate. Schools teach us that we need to have a teacher who speaks and students who listen. Schools teach kids not to ask questions for the fear that someone will laugh at them. Schools don’t teach people communication in the workplace

Lets have some quick ways that you can improve communication at work and when working with people

1. Talk and explain:

Instead of telling your employees what to do and what not to do, lets start with talking to and explaining whats required. And what is required is open communication, where you may share the vision, direction, tasks to be done and they can ask, confirm and enquire the next steps. Most of the time managers and supervisors instruct but don’t share. They don’t bring the employees into the vision.

2. Understand that everyone is different

One size fits all communication may not work. Different people need different styles of communication. Do you know what style your employees or team mates need for communication?

3. Explain the Why

Discuss why steps need to be done or actions need to be carried out. Start with the Why First. Then move to the How and the What. Then employees and staff can understand the importance of doing things right.

4. Repeat your message

You just have to keep doing it until it sets into their minds. One time communication does not sink in. Think of the advertisements that you watch, if you see something once- you will forget. Communication is exactly like that. Keep repeating your communication.

5. Reward in public, correct in private

Keep recognising good effort. If someone does what they have been asked to do in the communication- tell the team so that everyone knows that the positive is accepted. However when someone does something not as planned- communicate to the person in private

The best way to improve communication in organisations is to engage Safety@Work Consultancy who carry out consulting and training activities around Winning Hearts and Minds. One of the modules we carry revolves around communication. Safety@Work Consultancy also helped Petronas at the Petronas Learning Center when it was thinking about launching the Winning Hearts and Minds approach to its rigs and contractors

Decision Making in Safety

Decision Making in Safety and Health

Decision Making is one key factor in incidents as mentioned by IOGP and even companies like Petronas and Shell.

Every day people make decisions. Some big and many small decisions. An average person makes about 35000 decisions per day. What to wear, what to eat, where to go, how to drive etc. These are all decisions. As mentioned some decision making is relatively small and less risk. Some however is high risk- example, should I take the short cut, should I just do this work without the permit.

Decisions can affect the person or others.

  • A driver deciding to overtake on a single lane road
  • A employee working on an item without Lock Out Tag Out so as not to shut down the plant or rig
  • A manager deciding to continue a heavy lift without a key personnel
  • A supervisor deciding to continue the work when its about to rain but has not started yet
  • A new person not speaking up when seeing something wrong

Everyone makes decisions. Good people make good or bad decisions. Most people decide without looking at the consequences or when rushed. Some bad decisions have been made with good intentions- but they are still bad decisions.

Whats required is to learn how to make better decisions. To gain knowledge, skills and understanding of how to make better safer decisions when doing decision making. Especially in the offshore industry or in high risk industries.

Humans tend to choose the best they know how. But as author Jim Collins once noted, “bad decisions made with good intentions are still bad decisions.” It’s up to leaders to equip workers with the knowledge, skills, tools and environment to consistently make the choice that reduces exposure for themselves and others.

We must remember- even good people make bad decisions. Decisions don’t define our character. It may be lack of knowledge or skills.

Data is a start- incident reports and not blaming people- help us understand how better decisions can be made.

All decisions where made from a number of precursors- ranging from safety culture, systems, training, procedures, techniques, experience and more.

Improving the quality of decision-making is a company effort. The leaders must approach the challenge of better decision making not as a safety issue but as a company issue. Decision Making does not just affect safety and health- it also affects quality, productivity and profitability.

The best way to improve decision making in organisations is to engage Safety@Work Consultancy who carry out consulting and training activities around Winning Hearts and Minds. One of the modules we work with are designed around Decision Making. Safety@Work Consultancy also helped Petronas at the Petronas Learning Center when it was thinking about launching the Winning Hearts and Minds approach to its rigs and contractors

IOGP International Association of Oil Gas Producers

IOGP International Association of Oil & Gas Producers

The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) is the petroleum industry’s global forum in which members identify and share best practices to achieve improvements in health, safety, the environment, security, social responsibility, engineering and operations.

IOGP was formed in London in 1974 to develop effective communications between the upstream industry and the network of international regulators. Originally called the E&P Forum (for oil and gas exploration and production), in 1999 the name International Association of Oil & Gas Producers IOGP was adopted. Most of the world’s leading publicly traded, private and state-owned oil & gas companies, oil & gas associations and major upstream service companies are members. IOGP members produce 40% of the world’s oil and gas.

IOGP also represent the interests of the upstream industry before international regulators and legislators in UN bodies such as the International Maritime Organization and the Commission for Sustainable Development. IOGP also works with the World Bank and with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). It is also accredited to a range of regional bodies that include OSPAR, the Helsinki Commission and the Barcelona Convention, and provides a conduit for advocacy and debate between the upstream industry and the European Union (EU). This involves regular contact with the European Commission and the European Parliament.

Every year, IOGP collects and publishes data on upstream operations worldwide, both onshore and offshore, from participating member companies and their contractor employees. The reports are free and publicly available. The IOGP reports cover:

Occupational safety

Environmental performance

Process safety events

Health management

Land transport safety

Aviation safety

Occupational safety

Since 1985, when IOGP started reporting annual trends in upstream safety data, there have been considerable improvements in industry performance.

Today, it is the industry’s largest database of safety performance, covering participating member company employees and their contractors onshore and offshore, worldwide. Fatal incidents are analysed by incident category, activity and associated causal factors, and incident descriptions are provided for fatal incidents and high potential events.

IOGP has collected and published environmental data from its participating member companies on an annual basis since 2001. The objectives of this programme are to allow member companies to compare their performance with other companies in the sector; and increase transparency of industry operations. The reports aggregate information at both global and regional levels, expressed within six environmental indicator categories:

Gaseous emissions

Energy consumption

Flaring

Aqueous discharges

Non-aqueous drilling fluids retained on cuttings discharged to sea

Spills of oil and chemicals

Process safety events:

Process safety is a disciplined framework for managing the integrity of operating systems and processes that handle hazardous substances. It relies on good design principles, engineering and operating and maintenance practices. The process safety events (PSE) data are based on the numbers of Tier 1 and Tier 2 process safety events reported by participating IOGP member companies, separately for:

Onshore and offshore

Drilling and production

Activities

Consequences

Material released

The data are normalized against work hours associated with drilling and production activities to provide PSE rates.

Health management:

IOGP (with IPIECA) has developed two tools to assess health leading performance indicators within individual companies. These enable performance comparison between different parts of a company and between participating companies. The annual health leading performance indicators report illustrates the results submitted by participating companies for both tools and includes actual anonymous results for the year by company, trends over time and the potential benefits to health management in the industry. Land transport safety In April 2005, IOGP published Report No. 365, Land transportation safety recommended practice, a guideline designed to be applicable to all land transportation activities in the upstream oil and gas industry, including operators, contractors and subcontractors. IOGP collects data on motor vehicle crashes and information submitted by participating member companies are published from 2008 onwards. Data are broken down by region and crash category. Data are further grouped to indicate the number of crashes that resulted in a rollover. This includes:

Number of Motor Vehicle Crash (MVC) fatalities

Number of Motor Vehicle Crashes for each reporting group and category

Motor vehicle crash rate (Motor Vehicle Crashes per million kilometres) for each reporting group and category.

In 2018, IOGP published its Global Production Report. It is based on the latest BP Statistical Review of World Energy[6] and establishes an IOGP Production Indicator (PI) – the level at which a region is able to meet its own oil or gas demand – for seven regions across the world. A PI higher than 100% means the region produces more than it needs to meet its own requirements and so can export.

IOGP production indicators for oil and gas in seven regions.

The main conclusion of the report is that demand growth and the annual depletion rate of 6% of existing fields are driving the need for investment to gain additional volumes. Such investment will depend on regional and local policies that encourage responsible resource development.

European Petroleum Survey Group

In 2005, IOGP absorbed the European Petroleum Survey Group or EPSG (1986–2005) into its structure. EPSG was a scientific organization with ties to the European petroleum industry consisting of specialists working in applied geodesy, surveying, and cartography related to oil exploration. EPSG compiled and disseminated the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Set, a widely used database of Earth ellipsoids, geodetic datums, geographic and projected coordinate systems, units of measurement, etc.

Situational Awareness

Situational Awareness for Safety and for Oil & Gas personnel

First what is Situational Awareness? Everyone keeps talking about Situational Awareness but very few actually explain what Situational Awareness really is and how Situational Awareness can be applied to safety  and our work environments.  Basically Situational awareness is being aware of what is happening around you. Being aware of whats around you and whats happening around you- so that nothing happens to you. Its about looking at the environment around you, your team and crew mates, your tools and processes that you have- anything that without paying attention could be a threat to your health or safety or a threat to the health or safety of your crew mates.

Sometimes we hear of incidents involving a newbie or new hire. We hear of incidents happening to people who are affected by fatigue. Why? See our our knowledge, experience and education enables us to have this Situational Awareness and understand what is going on around us and helps us to determine if it is safe. For example- if you see a bright right snake that’s rearing itself up and hissing loudly – that’s a sign you need to keep away. But a young child without your knowledge or experience may not see it that way. Or think of F1 Drivers who have to make split second decisions and not crash. How can they be aware of whats happening around them – when they may not be in control.

Situational Awareness is very individual and very different from individual to individual. Yet we work in the same place or environment and are supposed to use our Situational Awareness to make decisions that are supposed to keep us safe and at the same time we instruct others.

Since Situational Awareness is only as accurate as the individuals perception- don’t you think that this seems to be left to chance? How can we improve this Situational Awareness or perception or ability to read the situation. Why should you improve it? Then there are cases where people who are very experienced and knowledgeable still suffer from not able to read the situation or not being alert enough. Almost likea temporary loss or lack of situational awareness. Sometimes there is too much happening for someone to concentrate. When I drive sometimes, the child is talking to me and the other is crying while I am driving- how can I concentrate and spot those things that could pose a serious threat to your health and safety.

How can you improve your Situational Awareness?

One must get in the habit of regularly stopping to do mental checks. Looking at the environment, the people, the tools- looking at whats being done and how. Then asking if any of these are out of place. If you see something unsafe or spot a hazard, don’t walk by – take responsibility to deal with it. If you feel you are in any immediate danger to your health or safety STOP work immediately and inform your supervisor.

Alternatively you can engage Safety@Work Consultancy who carry out consulting and training activities around Winning Hearts and Minds. One of the modules we carry is the Situational Awareness. Safety@Work Consultancy also helped Petronas at the Petronas Learning Center when it was thinking about launching the Winning Hearts and Minds approach to its rigs and contractors

Exxonmobil Starts 2 new plants Singapore

Singapore’s petrochemical industry improved when American energy giant ExxonMobil started production at two new multibillion-dollar plants. The huge Exxonmobil complexes, which were completed safely and on schedule, employed an army of more than 5,500 contract workers at the peak of construction. Safety is critical for all Exxonmobil projects and operations. All workers must be trained in safety and health. Something that Simply Safety does all the time.

The two Exxonmobil plants have added 140 jobs to ExxonMobil’s existing workforce of more than 2,500 at its Singapore manufacturing complex on Jurong Island. Exxonmobil already employs another 1,500 people here in support functions. The Exxonmobil plants were built under a multibillion-dollar expansion project at the Jurong Island site.

One of the new Exxonmobil plants will produce up to 90,000 tonnes a year of Exxonmobil’s own product – escorez hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins – making it the world’s largest facility of its kind. Escorez Hydogenated hydrocarbon resins are also used in diapers.

The second Exxonmobil plant will produce up to 140,000 tonnes a year of premium halobutyl rubber that is used in tyres. This is a competition with another existing plant in Singapore that is already producing similar product- Lanxess.

ExxonMobil’s output here has been scaling up fast. Apart from the start-up of the new plants, Exxonmobil acquired Jurong Aromatics Corporation’s Jurong Island plant- JAC is the largest aromatics plant in the world. One that Simply Safety and Safety@Work helped to train workforce and management staff.
